Dragon Fruit, also known as Pitya, is the fruit of a cactus that comes from Central America. Dragon Fruits are also grown in South East Asia and Northern Australia. Two types of Dragon Fruits are red on the outside but the inside flesh may be red, white or purple. There is also a yellow skinned Dragon Fruit.IMG_0134

Dragon fruits are easily picked and then cut in half and the inside flesh is then eaten.

Dragon fruits are rich in Vitamin C, anti oxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids ( known as good fats), several B vitamins including B1, B2 and B3, carotene, protein, calcium, iron and phosphorus.

The seeds, which are usually eaten with the fruit, contain omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. Lycopene which produces the red colour in Dragon fruit has been shown to lower prostate cancer risk.

Dragon fruit has been shown to be an anti inflammatory and to help people suffering from arthritis.
